Start with the J.N . "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge, one of the premier refuges in the US Fish and Wildlife Service's System. World famous for its winter migrating bird population, the Refuge welcomes visitors with an exciting Visitor's Center. Here, you will find interactive exhibits that entertain and inform, a gallery of refuge photography, a short video explaining the origin of the Refuge and its importance in the area ecosystem and much more.

A 2.6 mile road winds through its acres of mangrove forests, and brackish impoundments where herons, egrets, ibises, sandpipers and many other birds feed and roost. The Refuge is home to more than 220 different species of birds. Drive your car, take the naturalist-operated tram, or bike through, making as many stops as you wish to enjoy the surprises this sanctuary offers....read more »

Manatees

Manatees are the common name for a large, gray or black air breathing water mammal. Sometimes called a sea cow, the manatee looks somewhat like a hippopotamus. Adult manatees have large bodies averaging ten feet in length and weighing between 440 and 1300 pounds. Manatees have a small head with a straight snout having a bristly moustache on the upper lip. Paddle-like forelimbs are used to move through the water.

Manatees live in fresh, brackish, or salt water and roam with small herds somewhat like a family. Six to eight hours a day is spent grazing upon seaweed and other marine plants. Their slow metabolism reduces the energy requirements, thus they move slowly through the water. Because of their size, manatees have few natural enemies. Humans are the primary threat to the health and safety of the manatees....read more »

Cape Coral

When most individuals think of vacation destinations along the Gulf of Mexico, they usually imagine lying in the soft sand of a pristine, sparkling beach. While Cape Coral does offer access to some of the best beaches on the coast, it is more than a one attraction wonder. A well-known and highly regarded venue, the Sun Splash Waterpark is ideal for a family adventure with its two dozen wet and dry attractions scattered across 15 acres. A favorite attraction among nature enthusiasts, the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve offers numerous ways for visitors to explore the wonders of the area. Casual hikers and walkers can take a stroll through the mangrove forest and make their way out towards the pier over the Caloosahatchee River while the more adventurous can rent a kayak or canoe for a day of exploration. A kayak or canoe rental allows you to get up close and personal with the wildlife of the preserve, including alligators, manatees, jumping mullet, and numerous others, so if you feel up for the heart-pounding challenge, be sure to add this to your itinerary...read more about Cape Coral »
